Trouble $6.82 Some singer/songwriters (think Paul Westerberg and Elliott Smith) develop their world-weariness through the unforgiving trials of passing years and the heart-breaking grind of the music business. Others (Van Morrison, Neil Young) seem to have sprung from out of nowhere with the fully formed soul of a life well-lived. Ray LaMontagne belongs with the latter. On this, his debut, LaMontagne has crafte… |

Tranceport $10.38 Of all the genres within electronic music, trance probably gets the worst rap. The music is guilty by association with the hippies that worship it with a religious-like fervor. And if executed poorly, its dramatic crescendos sound like pretentious, pompous pap. But a good trance DJ can save a string of the genre’s records from falling down the drain of all-too-common gargantuan breakdowns and endl… |

A Year in the World: Journeys of a Passionate Traveler $14.98 The author who unforgettably captured the experience of starting a new life in Tuscany in bestselling travel memoirs expands her horizons to immerse herself—and her readers—in the sights, aromas, and treasures of twelve new special places. A Year in the World is vintage Frances Mayes—a celebration of the allure of travel, of serendipitous pleasures found in unlikely locales, of memory woven into the present, and of a joyous sense of quest. An ideal travel companion, Frances Mayes brings to the page the curiosity of an intrepid explorer, remarkable insights into the wonder of the everyday, and a compelling narrative style that entertains as it informs. With her beloved Tuscany as a home base, Mayes travels to Spain, Portugal, France, the British Isles, and to the Mediterranean world of Turkey, Greece, the South of Italy, and North Africa. In Andalucía, she relishes the intersection of cultures. She cooks in Portugal, gathers ideas in the gardens of England and Scotland, takes a literary pilgrimage to Burgundy, discovers an ideal place to live in Mantova, and explores the essential Moroccan city of Fez. She rents houses among ordinary residents, shops at neighborhood markets, wanders the back streets, and everywhere contemplates the concept of home. While in Greece, she follows the classic Homeric voyage across the Aegean, lives in a bougainvillea-draped stone house in Crete, and then drives deep into the Mani. In Turkey with friends, she sails the ancient coast, hiking to archaeological sites and snorkeling over sunken Byzantine towns. Weaving together personal perceptions and informed commentary on art, architecture, history, landscape, and social and culinary traditions of each area, Mayes brings the immediacy of life in her temporary homes to the reader. An illuminating and passionate book that will be savored by all who loved Under the Tuscan Sun, A Year in the World is travel writing at its peak. |

Adventure travel narratives: An illustration of the relationship between insight attainment and liminal experience. $49.99 Published travel narratives are an underutilized source of travel and tourism knowledge and are one avenue through which knowledge about travel is constructed. This knowledge influences travel style, destination choice, and travel expectations (Wilson & Richards, 2004). Many of these travel narratives describe life-changing insight experiences. Several of those narratives contain experience descriptions that involve liminal content. Yet, it is unknown whether these two elements are associated within the same narratives. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to examine the associations among liminal experience, insight, and related variables within the context of published adventure travel narratives. Content analysis was the method used to gather data to test the associations among insight, liminal experience, and other select variables. Content analysis involves a systematic reading of texts and was the method of choice because it is one way to test for associations among variables as they appear in travel narratives. In addition, content analysis is useful in exploratory studies to more fully understand the variables being studied and to retain the richness found within the text. Results support a significant association between liminal experience and insight. Within adventure travel narratives, insight rarely occurs without liminal experience. Only one of several three-way associations among liminal experience, insight, and related variables (number of travelers, travel motive, sex of traveler, and level of cultural novelty) resulted in a significant three-way association. Motivation to escape moderated the association between liminal experience and insight. Insight and liminal experience are major themes within adventure travel writing. Many travelers may, therefore, expect to gain insight experiences through travel. Travelers may also intentionally design their travel experience to gain insight. The travel industry might benefit by recognizing the |

Adventures in Poetry $9.99 M. Kienholz is one of the Northwest’s most versatile poets. Amy Woodward Fisher, former chairman of Washington State’s Poetry Day, described Kienholz’ style as incorporating rhythm and imagery; however, her poetry has an even broader definition. Her historical poetry ranges like a world traveler through human pathos, achievement, and brutality. Here, she addresses experiences of Native Americans, Chinese, and Japanese in the West, presents incisive descriptions of Northwest personalities and biographical sketches of more than thirty New World explorers. Her children’s poetry can be enjoyed equally by parents and children. She gives her animals personalities and dramatizes their worlds. Kienholz’ love poetry covers all the convolutions of the mating game. Much humor is evident in her serious poems, as well as in her doggerel and other stuff. Kienholz’ skillful use of poetic devices provides teachers with tools to explain poetry to students. Her poetry has won honors in many competitions as listed in the Appendix. The seven adventures in this volume of poetry: v Image and Imagination v A to Z Menagerie v Walk Through Washington State v Pearls of the Orient v Hound Dog’s Book of Doggerel and Other Stuff v We Love v Explorers of the Western World |

An Unfortunate Woman: A Journey $13.08 Richard Brautigan was an original-brilliant and wickedly funny-and his books resonated with the sixties, making him an overnight counterculture hero. Taken in its entirety, his body of work reveals an artistry that outreaches the literary fads that so quickly swept him up. Dark, humorous, and exquisitely haunting, his final book of fiction explores the fragile, mysterious shadowland surrounding death. Told with classic Brautigan wit, poetic style and mordant irony, An Unfortunate Woman assumes the form of a traveler’s journal, chronicling the protagonist’s journey and his oblique ruminations on the suicide of one woan and the death from cancer of another, a close friend. Author Biography: Richard Brautigan published ten novels, a book of short stories, and nine books of poetry during his short life. He is best known for his novel Trout Fishing in America, which has sold over 3 million copies worldwide. |
